Surprise, surprise. China Mobile to launch TD-SCDMA 3G service in time for Beijing Olympics

China Mobile, the biggest cellphone operator in the People’s Republic is preparing 3G mobile phone service for use at and during the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

It is working with Samsung, the South Korean handset manufacturer and is to present 15,000 3G handsets, together with data cards and nearly US$428,600 of donated calling fees to the Beijing Organising Committee for the 29th Olympiad.

China has long pledged to provide a 3G service in time for the Olympic Games and China Mobile had just completed construction of its home-grown TD-SCDMA network in eight Chinese cities, five of which will host events for the Games in August; they include Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin.

Mobile users in these cities and a few other places will be able to subscribe to the 3G service by accessing a mobile phone number prefixed with 157. The fee for local outgoing calls will be RMB0.4 per minute while incoming calls will be free. China Mobile says it will offer users  a 50 percent discount on the service during the trial commercial period.

As far as mobile comms is concerned, China Mobile is the sole co-operative partner for the Beijing Olympics while Samsung is the only company providing handsets.
