Free mobile game aims to help gorillas

The plight of gorillas is to be highlighted in a free new mobile phone game. The game, which is called Silverback, first emerged in 2003. It has now been updated and is available as a free download for web-enabled mobile phones.

Silverback players must guide a gorilla through life in its natural habitat in northern Rwanda’s Virunga National Park. The first level stars an abandoned baby gorilla trying to find its family again.Subsequent levels involve fights with rival silverbacks, trying to find a mate and avoiding poachers and snares. These are all trials that Rwanda’s real life gorilla population must face.

After downloading, players can donate what they wish for the game, an idea that creator Ken Banks says was inspired by Radiohead’s online availability of their latest album. All funds will go to international efforts to save gorillas.

Mr Banks told BBC News, “We didn’t want a Donkey Kong-style game, or a game where gorillas are chasing people or doing bad things.”
